Steven Hogg, Inside Applications Engineering Manager at Bastian Solutions’ Robotics Division in St. Louis, MO, was recently interviewed by industrial journalist Thomas R. Cutler and featured in Robotics Tomorrow magazine.

 

Hogg explained how the manufacturing and distribution sectors are responding to the dramatically increasing demand for robotics solutions. Most end-users are typically aware of industrial robotics and the various applications within their facility where they can be applied.  Many of Bastian Solutions’ customers understand the long-term benefits associated with robotics and have developed a strategic plan for robotic automation within their facility. This knowledge is driven by the large volume of information, case studies, and content available through different media outlets. 

 

Hogg added that the greatest resistance to change from fixed automation occurs when the company does not have any robots at their facility and have not developed a long term plan for automation and process improvement. He added when the warehouse or distribution center has an established programming architecture that technicians have utilized throughout their facility, the introduction of new technology into the facility is frequently met with resistance.

Seegrid Innovative Three-Dimensional Vision Navigation Featured in Wall Street Journal

Seegrid, maker of vision guided vehicles, was recently profiled in the Wall Street Journal. Steve Rosenbush, authored the feature titled, “Seegrid Calculates a New Route for Autonomous Vehicles.” According to Rosenbush, “Many of the autonomous vehicles that are expected to come to market by 2020 tackle the problem of perception by using laser sensors or high-definition cameras to absorb data about their environment. Seegrid takes a different approach. Five pairs of low-end cameras maintain a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s environment. The data is plotted on a three-dimensional grid. Proprietary algorithms determine the probability that an object is in the space represented by each cell of the grid and assess what that object is likely to be.”

The idea of using pairs of cameras is modeled on the way people see. Each camera in a single pair views an object from a slightly different perspective, and an algorithm analyzes the differential to assess the likely distance between the object and the vehicle.  Laser sensor-based systems for autonomous vehicles are coming to market faster, but Seegrid’s approach of using “stereo” vision to plot data in a 3-D graph will produce a more cost-efficient and ultimately more powerful solution.

The Seegrid system can cope with uncertainty by analyzing the probability that something will stand in its way, which is the way that people reason, according to Sid Wiesner, Seegrid’s vice president of engineering. Other kinds of sensors, such as lasers, produce a binary answer about whether an object is in the way of a vehicle, he says.

Customers include Whirlpool Corp., which uses 54 Seegrid-outfitted vehicles to move goods across its massive washing-machine manufacturing plant in Clyde, Ohio. A human driver teaches a Seegrid vehicle how to navigate a route by guiding it through one trip. Seegrid maps the route, and can function independently afterwards, improving its knowledge with successive trips.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. of Waltham, MA as a winner of the 2016 Gold Engineering Excellence Award for their work on the China Pavilion Expo in Milan, Italy.

The 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with emcees MA State Senator Karen Spilka and MA Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack.

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., with offices throughout the country, including Waltham, received the award for the firm’s work on the China Pavilion at the 2015 World Expo in Milan.  The project celebrated the Expo’s theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” by focusing on sustainability and the co-existence of nature and city.  Close collaboration and a holistic approach to architecture, engineering and fabrication brought the pavilion to life for its global audience. The structure's 4,000-sq-m undulating roof transitioned from sharp angles on its northern side replicating the urban skyline, to flowing curves on the southern side symbolizing China’s rolling landscape.

“The winning projects exemplify ingenuity and professionalism and represent the breadth of engineering’s contribution to our everyday lives,” said ACEC/MA President David Vivilecchia. “They are outstanding examples of how engineers connect communities, provide safe and reliable water and energy, and make our buildings safe and efficient. The professional engineers and their colleagues at our member firms are dedicated to working on quality infrastructure, which wouldn’t otherwise exist. Nephew Honors Deceased Uncle’s Life in WWII Book

Fort Worth, TX – March 31, 2016. J.E. Pendleton’s book, The Special honors the life of his uncle Billy Pendleton who served in WWII. Based in England as part of a U.S. flight crew, Billy was presumed dead over the Bay of Biscay in a battle with German planes in February 1944. He was lost just four months before D-Day. 

No trace of his plane or the crew was found until something very strange happened while Pendleton was writing The Special, more than 70 years after his Uncle’s disappearance. Coincidence or something else, you decide.

In addition to serving in WWII, Billy Pendleton was a car buff who loved to race the cars of the 30’s and 40’s and he was amazingly talented with his hands before he joined the service. He created furniture, radios, and other pieces that filled his parent’s home. 

Coincidentally, J.E. Pendleton is also a car nut and loves the racers of the 30’s and 40’s. As he began to build a car he calls The Special, to honor his uncle’s love of cars and racing, he had to become a sleuth, ferreting out any information he could find about his uncle and how the car would have been built in that era. What started out as a car build, turned into a series of serendipitous events detailed in the book that changed Jim’s life and resulted in the writing of The Special. 

It is hard to dismiss the idea that Uncle Billy had a hand in the writing of the book. At virtually the same time Jim was in his office writing about that final flight from more than 70 years ago, a strange discovery took place in the ocean south of Ireland. A fishing trawler pulled up its nets only to find the nearly pristine landing gear of an airplane tangled inside. Experts traced the serial numbers and discovered it was from Billy’s aircraft! Coincidence… you decide. 

The Special is filled with the story of Uncle Billy’s life, the car build, the people involved, interesting historic information about the world of car racers during the era, the men who served in WWII and an amazing love story.
