(PRBuzz.com) December 17, 2012 -- DECC announced the first £125M funding for the Green Deal. From 28th January 2013 householders can take advantage of the Green Deal to fund improvements such as adding loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and double glazing. The scheme works by offering a loan of up to £10,000 at an attractive rate of interest which is paid backing from the energy savings made through their electricity bill.

The full range of energy efficiency products has yet to be published but is likely to include microgeneration technologies such as solar PV and small wind turbines as well as energy efficient lighting such as LED's so allowing you to upgrade your lighting for free.

Green Deal works by providing you with a loan to add insulation, double glazing and next year renewable energy technologies and energy efficient lighting. It then calculates the savings that you are expected to make and takes a percentage of the savings back to repay the loan. Under the Golden Rule a householder must make enough savings to pay back the loan.

So for example if you take out a loan for £1,000 to pay for insulation and LED lighting this may be calculated to save you £250 in heating and electricity costs a year, for example dropping your combined bill from £1,250 to £1,000 a year. Of this £250 of savings a proportion is taken back, say 90%, to repay the loan, so £225 a year. This means that with interest your loan is likely to take under 5-years to pay back, after which you receive the full benefit of the savings. The important point is that by taking a loan out with Green Deal your bills can only fall, so effectively you are insulating your house and upgrading your lighting and paying for it with future savings.
