The overlap of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma is addressed in an upcoming webinar in two weeks on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 11:00 am EST. The timely webinar is called, “The Intersection of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.” There are limited space available to attend so it is recommended to register immediately at: http://bit.ly/1nVMDke.

Suggested attendees include those companies with Continuous Process Improvement, Lean Initiative, and Six Sigma teams currently implemented.  The ability to discern which projects optimize the impact of these programs is being avidly supported by technology which will be explored.  Often there is a fatigue and overwhelm following a year or more of these initiatives; keeping the time, effort, and resources in these efforts must also eliminate waste, which is the purpose of this important conversation.

Respected manufacturing journalist Thomas R. Cutler will moderate a conversation about the role that technology is playing in the recent overlap and utilization of both advanced lean manufacturing techniques in conjunction with Six Sigma methodologies. Cutler, the host of a weekly episodic video discussion, Kanbanversation, said these best practice methods have often been introduced separately and even the advent of Lean Six Sigma is now aggressively supported by new technologically supported solutions.

Participants include Randy Clark a Six Sigma Black Belt, American Society of Quality Examiner, Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award with over two decades as a practitioner and leader in Continuous Improvement efforts, with companies like Pitney Bowes and Whirlpool. Additionally Frank Kapper will join the conversation with over 30 years of experience architecting, directing, and managing successful enterprise and division-level information technology and business systems transformation initiatives in mission critical environments.  Kapper is a proven innovator in the application of advanced IT systems and process improvement methodologies to drive sustainable bottom-line improvement and growth.

Topper Industrial Reports Employers Pursuing Fork Truck Free Initiative Realize Best Results

$

Fork truck free initiatives are increasingly popular as sufficient data has revealed the true cost of fork truck ownership. Where purchasing managers are focused on lowest cost acquisition, operations managers must account for the extensive budgetary requirements in maintaining the fork truck fleet.

The ergonomic benefits, along with safety enhancements, increase the likelihood of North American fork truck free operations. OSHA compliance is best realized by eliminating the source of the safety hazard, according to Topper Industrial founder Ed Brown.

In the first year of a new reporting requirement, employers notified the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of more than 10,000 severe work-related injuries, creating the opportunity for the agency to work with employers to eliminate hazards and protect other workers.

Since January 1, 2015, employers have been required to report any severe work-related injury - defined as a hospitalization, amputation, or loss of an eye - within 24 hours. The requirement that an employer report a workplace fatality within eight hours remains in force.

Topper Industrial is exhibiting at MODEX 2016, the largest expo for the manufacturing and supply chain industries from April 4-7, 2016. Attendees visiting Topper Industrial at booth #647 will learn about fork truck free material handling equipment.

Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center Works with Magline in Value Stream Mapping Projects

$

Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC) expert Roger Tomlinson, is working closely with Jim Gage Plant Manager at Magline to conduct various lean manufacturing actions to ensure best practices, heightened efficiency, and elimination of waste.

There are two primary activities being conducted at the Magline Standish, Michigan headquarters.  Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Kaizen events.  Value stream mapping is a lean-management method for analyzing the current state and designing a future state for the series of events that take a product or service from its beginning through to the customer. Kaizen events used in the business sense and applied to the workplace, refers to activities that continuously improve all functions and involve all employees from the CEO to the assembly line workers. It also applies to processes, such as purchasing and logistics, that cross organizational boundaries into the supply chain.  By improving standardized activities and processes, kaizen aims to eliminate waste, the hallmark of lean manufacturing.

The current VSM projects being conducted by MMTC including the Kaizen Slider Ramp Process.  These are each being followed by corresponding Kaizen events.  According to Gage, “This first event focused primarily around the assembly operation and two main goals.  One, the distance product traveled before the final product got staged into shipping and the second goal doubling daily throughput.    Through both the VSM process and the Kaizen events, data and time studies were gathered and determined that by moving the assembly process to a different location on the plant floor a 50% reduction in wasted material movement could be achieved, including a larger footprint to allow better staging and preparation for assembly.”

The team members also looked at other areas of waste and made improvements to the area by adding conveyors and swivel tables to help ergonomics for the operator.

About MMTC, Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center:

Since 1991, MMTC has assisted Michigan's small and medium-sized businesses compete and grow. MMTC is part of the NIST MEP (Manufacturing Extension Partnership) program.

Heavy Equipment and Industrial Machinery Global Report 2015 (Construction, Agriculture and Forestry Equipment)

The global heavy equipment & industrial machinery market grew from $ 187 billion in 2010 to $ 271 billion in 2014, a CAGR of 9.7. Data covers construction and agricultural equipment. Demand for both construction and agricultural equipment has been increasing due to a growth in global population.

Natural Gas Supply Outlook

The report Natural Gas Supply Outlook foresees the following factors affecting gas supply in the US, Western Europe and China in the next ten years.
US - Shale gas will account for nearly half of total US gas production by 2040. Production volumes will continue to grow because of increased drilling efficiencies and more shale gas fields coming on stream.
The increased production is expected to decrease the country’s dependence on imports from Canada. LNG exports from the US are expected to increase beginning 2016.
Use of natural gas in sectors other than electrical power production is expected to expand in the medium term. The fertilizer and chemical sector industries particularly are expected to start new projects driving long term demand.
Europe - Europe is likely to see declining local production and increasing imports from areas such as West Africa the US, Canada and North Africa, resulting in more LNG supply. Thus two thirds of Europe’s natural gas needs are expected to be met by imports by the year 2025. With local production volumes expected to decline, and issues over the security of Russian gas, LNG imports are projected to approximately double between 2014 and 2020.
Due to the rise in investments in infrastructure, in particular new pipeline projects and the increased use of LNG, gas prices in Europe are likely to increase up to 2020. Prices are expected to stabilise beyond 2020.

Power Systems Global Report 2015

The generators market grew from $10.1 billion in 2010 to $17.2 billion in 2014, a CAGR of 14.2%. The generators market has been growing due to growth in various sectors such as construction, infrastructure, technology and housing. Caterpillar dominates the global power systems market. Caterpillar,s Energy and transportation division had revenues of $21.7billion. EMEA held the largest share in the global generators market in 2013 accounting for 37%.

Latest Study Linking Periodontitis with Kidney Disease

Dr. Navid Rahmani the principal of Contemporary Periodontics & Implant Surgery has a vast experience in his field, although he is always open to learn newest clinical studies into the close links between periodontitis and other serious health conditions.

Just recently research was published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology which adds to the growing body of evidence showing poor oral health being closely associated with other chronic diseases. This particular study was carried out by the University of Birmingham, showing patients with chronic kidney disease and periodontitis had a higher mortality rate compared to those with chronic kidney disease. Data was analysed for individuals with periodontitis and chronic kidney disease and was compared to those with chronic kidney disease alone. It showed an all-cause mortality rate of 41% at 10 years for those with both conditions compared to 32% for those with chronic kidney disease.

Commenting on the article Dr.Rahmani said “Although an increasing number of my patients are aware of the links between periodontitis and other serious health conditions, I still feel there is much to be done to raise awareness of these close connections.”
Periodontitis is a chronic disease and it affects more than 10% of the world’s population. Additionally, more people are suffering from other chronic diseases such as kidney disease which could be partially due to an ageing population and lifestyle habits. There is evidence to suggest that more than 90% of older adults have had at least one chronic disease.
Dr.Rahmani went on to say “Good oral health is very important for good overall health as the mouth provides an opening to the body and bacteria can access the bloodstream through diseased and bleeding gums. Unfortunately a lot of people with gum disease are unaware they have this condition and think perhaps bleeding gums whenever they brush their teeth are perfectly normal.”
About Contemporary Periodontics & Implant Surgery

Contemporary Periodontics & Implant Surgery is a specialist practice treating problems caused by periodontitis, including periodontal plastic surgery and bone grafting, using advanced technologies and therapies. As a board certified periodontist, Dr.Rahmani has extensive training and experience in dental implantology.

Using Shockwave Therapy to Treat Chronic Pain Injuries

NEW YORK - March, 2016 - Today, celebrated doctor, Dr. Arcady Lipnitsky announced the availability of a new, sought-after chronic pain-relieving treatment called "Shock Wave Therapy," ESWT. This exclusive therapy was not previously available in the USA, but Dr. Lipnitsky is a champion of offering his clients choices in eliminating pain, and is now giving his clients the "best of the best" in treating many types of chronic pain, previously less responsive to other therapies.

Shockwave is an acoustic wave, which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues. Shockwave therapy has shown great success in treating pain, when other therapies have not been optimally effective.
Dr. Lipnitsky and his staff at Pain Physicians NY are renowned pain treatment experts. They are famous for interventional pain management, minimally invasive spine surgery, chiropractic rehabilitation, physical rehabilitation, regenerative medicine and now, extra corporeal shockwave therapy.
He utilizes many techniques and treatment protocols like ART, FMS, Eccentric exercise training, spinal decompression, gentle spinal manipulation techniques, Kinesis One and VibraCore training.

Throughout the years, Dr. Lipnitsky has developed truly unique treatment protocols, combining his advanced Eastern European massage skills with his diverse experience in chiropractic medicine and functional rehabilitation to treat some of the most challenging neuromuscular and skeletal conditions. Shockwave therapy is a very effective modality and has shown promise in most patients.

Dr. Lipnitsky actively participates in research and development of a new age multi-spectral laser technology and its diverse application in the treatment of many neuromusculoskeletal conditions. He has successfully helped patients avoid surgery who have conditions such as multiple herniated disc, radiculopathy, neuropathies, sports and dance injuries including rotator cuff, ankle, knee and hip pathology; chronic repetitive injuries and entrapments.

Oral Bacteria Could Be a Cause of Esophageal Cancer

As one of the top periodontists in NYC, Dr. Daria Royzman has vast experience in her fields and she is always interested to comment about the latest research into gum disease and its connection to other serious health conditions. A new study has found that a bacterium responsible for causing gum disease is present in nearly 2/3 of people with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

The research was carried out at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and found that Porphyromona gingivalis, a bacteria known to cause gum disease, while present in a considerable percentage of patients with esophageal cancer, was undetectable in normal healthy esophageal cancer and could be found in just 12% of tissues near to the cancer. This new research is the very first indication that P. gingivalis could be a risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

The esophagus is the tube in the throat that transports food into the stomach. There are a couple of probable causes as to the connection between the bacteria and the cancer, as it’s possible that the cancer cells allow P. gingivalis to multiply or that somehow the presence of these bacteria enables the development of this type of cancer.

The possibility that gum disease could somehow facilitate the development of esophageal cancer is something that Dr. Royzman finds extremely interesting, saying ”If it turns out that these bacteria could somehow affect the development of esophageal cancer then it raises the possibility that treating or preferably preventing gum disease may reduce a person’s risk of developing this cancer.”
There are a number of risk factors associated with esophageal cancer and it is very difficult to diagnose at a stage where treatment is successful because the disease often progresses very rapidly. As such, esophageal cancer tends to be characterized by high mortality rates.
Dr. Royzman went on to comment “This is hardly the first serious health condition to be associated with gum disease and it just highlights the importance of the need for good periodontal care as gum disease is highly preventable.”

Local Integrator Jackson Hole AV Indtroduces 4K Ultra HD Services

Jackson Hole, WY— Jackson Hole AV, a Wyoming integrator that specializes in home media solutions and custom home theaters, is expanding their services to include 4K HD. With this announcement they also expanded their brand reach with top 4K brand, Kaleidescape. 4K,, is a digital image technology that displays four times the number of pixels found in a full HD picture. Arranged in a 3,840 X 2,160 configuration 4K offers a higher resolution than normal 1,920 X 1,080 HD. All of the industry’s top brands debuted 4K TVs at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show which indicates a major move toward the availability of this new technology in the coming year.

Looking at the differences between HD and 4K/UHD the most obvious point is that HD has a resolution of 1080 pixels. 4K comes in at 3840x2160 pixels at minimum—essentially an increase of four times the resolution (thus the name 4K). But that also means that if you are streaming 4K content, your connection has to suddenly deliver four times data in the same amount of time. In order to have a system that can deliver that amount of bandwidth, along with content that is truly 4K, home theater owners are going to want to consider some additional upgrades.

In order to get the most of you 4K experience you need a 4K source (some offered by services such as Netflix and Amazon) and a boosted internet network/connection. In some cases, you might have the option of upgrading to Internet with a higher connection speed, but that’s simply not always possible. In Jackson Hole, for example, the infrastructure doesn’t yet exist in most cases to provide the extraordinary connection speeds that would allow your technology to provide true 4K quality at all… much less without all that infuriating buffering.

If faster Internet isn’t an option, Kaleidescape offers a 4K Ultra HD high-dynamic-range move player for home media streaming a movie watching needs. Kaleidescape’s Strato allows you to download your DVD and Blu-Ray movies to its a local hard drive — either on the Strato or a Terra Movie Server, which is a device that exclusively stores content. An entire movie collection on the Kaleidescape Terra Movie Server can then play back the movies in full 4K Ultra HD, at up to 60 fps (frames per second) on up to 50 players.

For applications where accessing movies outside of those previously owned is a desired factor the Kaleidescape Alto Movie Player is another option. Available with a 6TB hard drive, the Alto Movie Player can still play Blu-ray discs and DVDs, but it also allow you to download Blu-ray and DVD quality movies from the Kaleidescape Movie Store. Because these movies can first download and then play, their playback quality is no longer dependent on bandwidth.

Linda Allred, CEO of Linda Allred, honors the women who have been trailblazers socially, educationally, economically and politically working to establish equal rights for women throughout the world and expresses her gratitude for the continuing efforts of all.

She has achieved great success in helping people lose weight, manage stress, make more money and run a successful business. Allred has posted a new article on her website entitled “Gratitude for the Trail Blazers in Honor of International Women’s Day.”

Expressing admiration and gratitude, Allred writes, “So, here’s to all the women who’ve come before us to fight for our rights as citizens of this world when those rights were being denied us. The struggles are not over. Not by a long shot. There are still rights to be fought for women here in the U.S. as well as around the world. However, we have made much progress.”

Allred shares information gathered from www.internationalwomensday.com, writing, “I visited the International Women’s Day Website to see what events were happening in my area and around the world. Their theme this year is gender parity. I was surprised to read that, “The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity. Then one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn't close entirely until 2133.”

As Allred states, “It seems like such a very long time away before we humans can see each other as equals.” She adds, “I hope and pray that it doesn’t take that long, though if it does, I pray that we accomplish more than just gender parity by then.”

Steven Stillz Rapidly Taking the Craft of the Moonshine Still to the Stars

$

Nashua, New Hampshire – While considered more of a historical relic than a contemporary hobby, producing high-quality moonshine has become a more common pursuit due to the growth in popularity of individual craft distilleries.

Seeing the wave as a means for further growth, coppersmith Steven Stillz harkens back to his Appalachian roots by crafting and selling specialized copper moonshine stills, and other distilling and brewing equipment to enterprising moonshiners in the 21st century. Stillz’ products are the result of niche expertise and a hand for customizing his orders.

When asked about how demand has shaped his business, Stillz comments: “most of our micro-distillery applications are opting to have their stills built with 1/8” plate copper, because they generally run several days per week and they find that the heavier copper plate is more forgiving of damage and wear due to constant use.”

With well over a century of family legacy in the distilling and coppersmithing industry, Stillz offer the unique benefit of total customization according to client needs. Micro-distilleries aren’t a one-size-fits all, and Stillz has taken advantage of that by offering his expertise and advice as a coppersmith to distilleries looking to equip themselves with better hardware.

Copper is the primary metal used, because it boasts some of the best durability for its price, and comes with the added benefit of neutralizing moonshine’s natural sulfur. A secondary product benefit, according to Stills, is higher quality copper. “Heavy 20 ounce copper will not burn or dent as easily as the 16 ounce paper thin copper stills offered elsewhere,” Stills notes. “Our stills aren’t ‘slapped together’ – there is a considerable amount of labor and skill involved in the construction of these fine custom works of art.

As the popularity of modern moonshine increases, so does demand for Stillz’ unique offering. “This is what we are preserving here,” says company head Steven Stillz. “This is a rich American heritage that still persists today with a growing interest in this forgotten art practiced by our forefathers in pre-revolution America.”

Stillz and his company offer a number of different project sizes as well, with stills ranging from 6 gallons to over 100. According to Stillz himself, every still is fully tested and polished to a finish before considering a sale. The company specializes in constructing stills for various purposes – from the dedicated practice of making moonshine at home, to more commercial uses, such as a professional craft distillery. More information on the product is available in the company’s website, at: http://www.stillzstore.com.

About Us:

Dr. William P. Caldon, D.M.D., co-owner of Plattsburgh’s High Peaks Dental, discusses the importance of fluoride treatment for young children.

Plattsburgh, NY —  April 1, 2016 — Renowned Plattsburgh dentist Dr. William Caldon published a new blog post entitled “American Academy of Pediatrics Recommends Fluoride for Infants.” In the post, he explains what fluoride is, how it prevents cavities and the recommended treatments for children as young as six months old.

Says Caldon, “Many new parents wonder when to start taking their children to the dentist. Is it at one year old or two? You might be surprised to learn that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States. Tooth decay can cause localized infections, sometimes causing serious illness or even death, and it increases the risk for systemic illnesses, like diabetes, to develop later in life. The good news is – tooth decay is largely preventable. A recent change in fluoride recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) gives parents a reason to begin scheduling professional dental visits as soon as an infant’s teeth come in. The updated recommendations call for fluoride varnish to be applied to a child’s teeth every three to six months, beginning at six months old.”

Dr. Caldon has been a co-owner of High Peaks Dental since 1996 after serving in the

United States Air Force for 20 years and retiring as a Colonel. He received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Louisville and his Bachelor’s from Thomas More College. In 2013, USA Today featured Caldon as one of America’s Premier Dentists.

TravelSafer Highlights How Under Inflation of Tires is Costing U.S. Drivers Money

$
0
0

In tough economic times who can afford to waste money on excess fuel usage? TravelSafer emphasizes the large fuel spend caused by under inflated tires.

Under inflated tires cause U.S. drivers to waste 1.2 billion gallons of fuel annually and according to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly inflated tires can improve fuel efficiency by 3.3 percent and save up to 11 cents per gallon at the pump. Could you do with a few extra dollars in your pocket each week?

And besides that, properly inflated tires are safer, last longer and minimize risk of tire failure by reducing tread movement and rolling resistance, and increasing water dispersion.

According to a 2010 Rubber Manufacturers Association study, only 17 percent of vehicles had four properly inflated tires and 55 percent of vehicles had at least one under inflated tire.

A spokesperson from the company TravelSafer, manufacturer of a portable easy to use digital tire pressure gauge, says checking tire pressure regularly, only once per month and before every long trip can save lives and improve fuel economy. He gave a few tips for tire safety:

“Tire pressures should be checked when tires are cold (preferably after 3 hours not driven or perhaps first thing in the morning). The correct tire pressure can be found in the car owner manual, on the gas tank lid, the driver’s side door edge, or on the door post. And don’t forget to check the spare.”

“It’s important to know that tire pressure must be the same on the tires of each axle, but may be different from front to back. And remember to tightly close the valve caps to protect from dust and dirt and to prevent leaking.  Replace missing valve caps without delay.”

“Don’t rely on tire pressure monitoring systems either,” he continues, “They only issue a low pressure warning after tire pressure drops 25 percent below the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. A small drop in air pressure may not trigger a warning light but would cause a loss of fuel economy and impair road handling.”

Unfortunately, most people have a hard time telling the difference between a full tire and one that is low, and struggling with awkward gas station tire gauges can be a hassle. In order to help drivers monitor their tire pressure, the company TravelSafer has developed their digital tire pressure gauge to be used on cars, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles. Its illuminated nozzle and LCD screen allows the tire pressure gauge to provide accurate readings day or night and in poor light conditions.

With unpredictable natural disasters, do you wonder if your condo is a safe renting and living environment in the event of an earthquake? Fortunately, according to studies, taller buildings like most condos today are designed to be safer than low-rise structures during calamities and disasters.

While this is great news for you, it’s no reason to be complacent. Increase your survival chances with these 20 dos and don’ts for surviving in your condo during earthquakes.

10 Must Dos in Your Condo During Earthquakes
1. Stay Calm

Although this sounds cliche, staying calm is one of the important things to do during an earthquake.

It may sound difficult because earthquakes are indeed scary, but you have to muster the courage to keep calm and focus on the situation.

It will help you do the necessary condo safety steps to protect yourself and your family.

2. Go Under a Sturdy Table

[Photo courtesy of Unsplash via Pixabay]

Look for a sturdy table and always remember this formula: “Drop, Cover and Hold on.” First, drop down on your arms and knees as this position will enable you to move without falling. Second, seek cover under a sturdy furniture.

Lastly, hold on to the furniture to secure yourself from being moved around.

3. Count Aloud to 60

Apart from calming you down, counting aloud to 60 is an important step to help you monitor any immediate aftershocks.

It will also allow people nearby to know your presence.

4. Wait it Out

[Photo courtesy of steinchen via Pixabay]

It is crucial that you wait for all the shaking to stop until you get out of cover.

Aftershocks can occur seconds after the first quake, depending on the magnitude.

Small and medium earthquakes can last only for a few seconds, while large earthquakes can continue for several minutes.

5. Go to an Interior Wall

When there’s no immediate cover, seek shelter near an interior wall.

It’s one of the best earthquake safety tips for those living in a condo.

The reason is that condo nowadays are stronger and better designed.

Remember to use your arms to cover your head and neck.

6. Grab the First Aid Kit

If you or a family member is injured, use the interval between quakes to quickly grab the first-aid kit.

But do this only if it’s within your reach.

Take action quickly, calmly, and safely. Check also for other injuries and damages that need immediate attention. Again, stay inside your condo during this time until the shaking stops. Never move anyone seriously injured unless there’s immediate danger.

7. Stay Inside

Staying inside your condo will protect your from falling debris and panicking people outside.

Your space is one of the safest places during an earthquake.

Modern high-rise condos are designed to withstand shocks and seismic motions. Because of their sturdy construction, as compared to very old high-rise buildings, modern high-rise condos are safer. That condos are safe and great living spaces justify the increasing demand for condo rental.

8. Stay Away from Windows

[Photo courtesy of Republica via Pixabay]

Windows are hazards during an earthquake because they are usually the first to break or collapse.

Stay away from this danger zone, as well as from facades, hanging objects, and mirrors.

9. Reach for the Flashlight

[Photo courtesy of Cezary Borysiuk via Flickr]

Flashlights are important during earthquakes because electrical power will likely be disrupted.

As a preparatory measure, make sure that flashlights are within reach or strategically placed in your condo.

Keep one in the  drawer near your bed or the living room table to make them easily available.

10. Be Alert

[Photo courtesy of DariuszSankowski via Pixabay]

Many things can happen during this uncontrollable situation, but your best compass for an appropriate action is staying alert throughout.

If using your phone is possible, text or call a family or friend that is out of the area.

Tell them where you are and then stay off the phone to conserve battery.

10 Must Don’ts in Your Condo During Earthquakes
1. Don’t Rush to Go Out

Many injuries occur when people rush outside, not only because of the possible chaos but also of falling and flying objects.

Don’t rush outside during an earthquake, only do when the shaking has stopped.

2.Don’t Seek Out Power Lines

[Photo courtesy of ColiN00B via Pixabay]

Power lines are dangerous during earthquakes because of the electrical current.

When the power goes out, let it be. Rely instead on battery-operated devices like flashlights or even your smartphone.

3. Don’t Go Under a Doorway

A doorway isn’t a safe place during earthquakes because you can easily get trampled.

Doorways also leave you vulnerable because they cannot withstand earthquake tremors as better as a table or a bed.

4. Don’t Get Out of Bed

[Bed]

Earthquakes can strike anytime, even while you’re asleep.

Your bed can protect you when the shaking starts. Use your pillow to cover your head. Only leave your bed when there is a ceiling fixture that might fall.

5. Don’t Hide in the Kitchen

As much as possible, do not hide in your kitchen for various reasons.

First, the kitchen cabinets can open and drop things like plates, knives, and glass.

Second, the stove or any electrical appliance can cause fire.

Third, larger appliances like the fridge or exhaust can fall on you.

6. Don’t Use Matches, Candles or Any Flame

[Photo courtesy of Gadini via Pixabay]

As there might be damaged gas lines, don’t use matches or any flame during and immediately after the earthquake.

7. Don’t Shout for Help

Yelling during earthquakes can only be a good idea if you’re helping someone who’s experiencing anxious paralysis and cannot seek cover. Otherwise, shouting can make you inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

A better option if you want to call the attention of a rescuer is to use whistles, if one happens to be on hand.

8. Don’t Go to Your Car

[Photo courtesy of kaboompics via Pixabay]

If the earthquake strikes while you’re inside your condo, never attempt to go to your car to escape or seek shelter.

Again, it’s better to protect yourself inside your condo.

9. Don’t Ride the Elevator

[Photo courtesy of StockSnap via Pixabay]

Don’t ever ride the elevator if you have to get out of the building.

When the electrical power goes out, you can get trapped inside the elevator. Use the stairs instead.

10. Don’t do the “triangle of life”

The “triangle of life” has attracted attention as a formula to survive during earthquakes. But some reports reveal that it’s not exactly reliable because it hasn’t been tested during actual earthquakes. For now, at least, stick to the must-dos backed by evidence listed here.

Because of building codes, better design, and the lessons of past disasters, modern condos for rent are much safer and better than low-rise structures.

It has also become a trend for developers to make condos earthquake-resistant.

Make sure to inspect your condo to know its safety features during disasters. Also, while knowing what to do during an earthquake in a condo is important, it’s equally, if not more important, to prepare for earthquakes in any scenario.

Prepare your emergency plan, medical kit, and join disaster preparedness workshops so you can better protect yourself and loved ones during earthquakes.
