Raonic, currently the 13th-ranked tennis player in the world, topped the list for most-searched for Canadian Olympians, while the Toronto Blue Jays were the most queries Canadian sports team. Overall, Tiger Woods remained the most-searched for athlete, finishing ahead of Steve Nash, Michael Phelps, Lebron James, and Usain Bolt.

Bacon topped the list for most popular food search item, coming in ahead of poutine (a potato dish with gravy and cheese curds), maple syrup, Yorkshire pudding, and bannock (a flat bread). San Francisco (PRBuzz.com) December 18, 2012 -- The blogging site Tumblr shut down its forums earlier this month after a worm began producing offensive messages, according to SpamFighter.com.

The attack on the Internet site began through posts on different blogs. The worm affected about 1,000 blogs, Tumblr's operators said in its news feed. The site halted publication of blog posts in an effort to prevent the worm from spreading.

The site was returned to normal functionality within a few hours, and Tumblr officials thanked all the site's users for their patience.

The offensive messages came from malware that took advantage of weaknesses in the site's software, according to experts at the anti-virus software company Sophos. Posted messages contained code that connected to malware at a different site. JavaScript with base-64 code also was inside an iframe that linked to a third site.

The attackers made it difficult to figure out how the malicious script worked by condensing ASCII text to represent large chunks of binary data.

An expert who is not affiliated with Sophos also analyzed the attack and found that the malware exploited an XSS weakness. Janne Ahlberg said the problem with the cross-site scripting remained even after Tumblr officials said the attack had been resolved.

Ahlberg set up an account with the blog using different browsers and then published a message with XSS. She said she logged on through a separate account and found the weakness remained.

Ahlberg said that more far-reaching attacks will be possible unless Tumblr acts to solve the blogging software's security problems.

The total number of buyers was just under 2 million, which was up 400,000 from 2011. The average purchasing tally was at 1,600 euros in 2012, which constitutes a +400 move. Average number of purchases rose by 33% to hit 20 per customer. Total spent was a monumental rise, as it increase 1.1 billion from 2011 to 2012, and hitting 2.9 billion.

With all the rises in e-commerce, Greece still failed to meet the Western European average, and AUEB professor George Doukidis stated the EU average would mean online sales per year would need to be over 5 billion euros.

San Francisco (PRBuzz.com) December 18, 2012 -- Google has shut down Chinese online shopping services. The move considerably cuts into the company's product portfolio for the country following its removal of a free music service in September of 2012.

Google and China have had its run-ins with one another before; however, most of the head-butting tended to stem from security issues, and not based on economics. Nevertheless, that seems to be the case for the most recent rift between the two companies.

"Shopping in China was not providing businesses with the level of impact we had hoped, so we will be sunsetting it in order to focus on the products that do," the company said in a statement. Google subsequently announced its rededicated focus to resources in advertising services for applications and search functions. It will also seek to work on connecting Chinese suppliers with overseas customers with items like Global Market Finder, and other supplemental tools.

Google's presence on the internet within China is declined ever since its 2010 shutdown of its Chinese-based search engine. The shutdown came after the internet search engine giant clashed with authorities over particulars within censorship. Ever since that clashing, access to Google's sites have become undermined left and right, and generally slowing by Internet censors have frustrated the company. In November, all of Google's sites were blocked by the country.

"Talking with Internet and mobile Internet users, we didn't run into many who were particularly familiar with Google's shopping service," said Mark Natkin, managing director for Beijing-based Marbridge Consulting. "In many cases, many people were not even aware it existed."

Last September, Google shut down the free music service it had brought to China, as it faltered in popularity. Google searches in general had in fact fallen for the previous two years, and the online service garnered 5% of the Chinese market share, according to CNZZ.com.

China is not the only country that has seen closing by Google, as the company shifts resources to popular products. Nearly 50 products were changed up through August, according to Google.

The city has been working hard to attract such technology industry companies and jobs. The sector is thought to be one of the options to help the city out of its budget shortfall and unemployment.

The Microsoft corporation recently committed to opening a tech development center that will help employ younger workforce members as apprentices, according to Tech City.

Meanwhile, Cisco will begin a partnership with University College London, as well as DC Thomson, in order to create a center that hosts digital media companies.

"The U.K. is in a global race, and I am determined that we as a government continue doing everything we can to equip the U.K. to compete and thrive," Prime Minister David Cameron said in the statement. "As well as backing the businesses of today, we are creating an aspiration nation and also backing the innovative, high-growth businesses of the future."

San Francisco, CA (PRBuzz.com) December 18, 2012 -- The downtown bathrooms in Austin have finally been removed, as workers tore down the facilities that had stood, out of service, since 2009.

The tear-downs had been scheduled for fall, but the work was delayed after the city council took the time to reevaluate the decision. There had been a movement to have the bathrooms revamped and reopened, rather than shutting them down completely.

City Engineer Jon Erichson stated that performing the repairs that would keep the bathrooms functional would cost more money that it was worth. The council voted to not include it and leave the demolition plans in place.

A $20,000 budget was set in the Capital Improvement Plan for asbestos abatement, demolition, and restoration on the site. Due to the year being nearing a close, the cost was likely to carry over into the new new year, according to Assistant Engineer to the mayor, Steven Lang.

In October, the council of Austin voted 6-1, Marian Clennon was the lone dissenting voice, for awarding the $1,990 bid to H&L Brothers Inc.

Council Member Brian McAlister stated that an August meeting concluded the bathrooms had more than enough issues accumulated over their 40 years in service.

"It's never been a draw for the downtown area," McAlister said. "They've been a problem all that time."

The bathrooms were victims of vandalism, as well as having a history of maintenance issues, according to McAlister.

The facilities were originally implemented as part of a mall center project for the downtown area in the 1970s.

"It was kind of a spruce-up downtown thing," McAlister said.

Judy Enright, fellow Council Member, noted that she pushed to save the restrooms. According to Enright, too many businesses close early in the evening, leaving many without a public bathroom to use in the evening.

Clennon agreed, stating public restrooms are useful for those visitors exploring the downtown area.

"Something as small as having public bathrooms is a big deal," she said.

The new site - Medium - is an effort by Evan Williams and Biz Stone, who helped create Twitter and Blogger. The word "blogger" has been credited to Williams, Jeffries writes.

What makes Medium different is curating. A stream of postings would be selected that is most relevant to users.

"We want to help the best ideas and stories have the biggest possible impact," Williams told Jeffries. "For the vast majority of people, Medium will have a higher return-on-investment for writing than publishing one's own blog."

Medium's algorithms, with a little human help, are intended to make sure a writer's posts go out to an group of interested readers. Writing will be grouped in "collections" that might share a common theme. Readers will be presented with a mix similar to group blogs.

The collection titles also can be seen as writing prompts. Jeffries notes examples such as "When I was a kid" and "This happened to me."

Medium will also promote posts in collections, such as "Front Page Picks."

The site has hired high-powered literary agent Kate Lee to be director of content with the aim of showing its dedication to quality.

A variety of content is already available, and much of it is engaging, according to Jeffries.

Whether Medium will become the Internet's next big message remains to be seen. The platform has several qualities working in its favor. Jeffries sees it as "earnest, encouraging, and unintimidating."

A music blogger wrote that the platform was well-suited to her writing, noting that there is no feedback, unlike other social media sites.

"There's no count of who reads or likes," says Michele Catalano, according to Jeffries. "The validation we're so used to with social media isn't really on Medium. It's a good break from it."

Jeffries is withholding judgment of Medium's vision until it builds a critical mass of writers and users.
